What have you learned so far that you can apply in your instructional practice?
One thing that really sticks out to me is that the people around the community are willing to help if the ‘PRICE’ is right. One business that I went to asked what was in it for them… It was kind of shocking to hear this man say that, but I have a feeling that this is what happens all the time. From this experience, I will show all of my students the emails that I have sent and explain / walk them through the process that I have been taking. There is something that we all can take out of this experience; you can not settle for no if it is something that means a lot to you. I have had more people tell me that they can not help me than people who are willing.
What goals are you still working toward?
I am working on obtaining more businesses from around my school area. I went last week after summer school and drove around the area looking for good businesses that I could / would want to have come into my classroom. I am also working on setting up a classroom website. I think that a website, not just a Wiki would be a great tool for my students. This coming up school year, I heard through the grape vine that we are all gong to be required to have a classroom website. I want to get as much of a head start on that as I can.
Based on the NETS-T, what new learning goals will you set for yourself?
Standard 5 - Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.
I think that I am doing a good job at trying to obtain the above standard. I believe that I am learning valuable digital tools to effectively communicate with people from around the community.
Standard 2 - Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified
I need to learn new and effective ways to develop learning experiences online. I would love to be able to assess my students online in various ways. I think that online ways to assess them would give immediate feedback and be easier on me.
If you are not ready to set new learning goals, how will you extend what you have learned so far?
The only goals that I am going to add are the ones from above. I want to learn how to create online assessments and continue to develop my professional growth through being a lifelong learner. I think through using Walden University, this will definitely help me learn how to be a lifelong learner without even leaving my house (thank you internet).
What learning approaches will you try next time to improve your learning?
I think that I need to read more online or text books. There is so much information out there from so many different educators, that reading and being involved through blogs, wikis, etc, is an easy thing to do. Also, asking questions from my fellow colleagues and professors to obtain answers to questions will help me improve my learning.
I set up a classroom website last year and I can’t say enough about the positive impacts it made. At the beginning of every unit I posted the family letter that the math curriculum asked to send home in English and Spanish. I also posted upcoming events at the beginning of every month. I heard positive feedback from every parent that commented about the website. I also started having students produce a newsletter to be posted on the website every month. As part of writing class students would be assigned a topic such as sports, weather, upcoming events, and miscellaneous items. This year I am working on adding math tutorial links to the website.
ReplyDeleteMichael and Bryan,
ReplyDeleteI as well would like to set up a classroom website. I just was wondering which site did you use to create a classroom website? I have seen that scholastic has a site that can help you create one but is there anything else you suggest? I already have a blog set up but I think a website is better when posting information and pictures, etc.
